Glycopeptide antibiotics including vancomycin represent crucial therapeutic options for serious infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and other resistant gram-positive bacteria. Vancomycin resistance in enterococci emerges through acquisition of vancomycin resistance gene clusters (van operons) including vanA, vanB, vanC, vanD, vanE, vanF, and vanG variants with varying resistance levels and antimicrobial profiles. Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) cause healthcare-associated infections with limited treatment alternatives and high mortality, particularly in immunocompromised patients.
