Brucella spp. are gram-negative, facultative, intracellular coccobacilli that may cause brucellosis in humans and livestock. The Brucella abortus strain S19, a spontaneously attenuated strain, has been used as a vaccine strain in vaccination of cattle against brucellosis for six decades. But in last decade Brucella abortus strain RB51 has become the official vaccine for the prevention of brucellosis in cattle in several countries.
