The early mortality syndrome (EMS) is an emerging shrimp disease more technically known as acute hepatopancreatic necrosis síndrome (AHPNS), caused by a unique strain of Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The pathogenic bacteria colonizes the shrimp gastrointestinal tract and produces a toxin that causes tissue destruction and dysfunction of the shrimp digestive organ (hepatopancreas).
