Theileria equi is a known cause of equine piroplasmosis. Theileria is a genus of parasites that belongs to the phylum Apicomplexa and is closely related to Plasmodium. Is also called Babesia equi and it disease is characterized by fever, anemia, icterus, hepatomegaly, edema, intra-vascular hemolysis, hemoglobinuria and even death. These parasites affect horse industry worldwide, causing economic loss and impacting the international movement of horses.
