Ruminococcus is a genus of bacteria in the class Clostridia. They are anaerobic, non-motile with a coccoid shape, Gram-positive gut microbes. Two species of ruminococci are among the most abundant cellulose- degrading bacteria in the rumen of cattle, sheep and goats, and may also make a major contribution to plant cell wall breakdown in the large intestine. These bacteria also detected in others wild mammals as well as in the human large intestine.
