Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serovars Enteritidis and Typhimurium represent the two most important serovars causing human salmonellosis globally, accounting for the majority of salmonellosis cases and associated foodborne illness outbreaks. S. Enteritidis has a particular association with poultry and eggs, with contaminated shell eggs and poultry products as major transmission sources. S. Typhimurium has broader host range and environmental persistence, frequently isolated from various animal reservoirs and environmental sources. Both serovars cause acute gastroenteritis with fever, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and potential complications including bacteremia and systemic infection in vulnerable populations. Antibiotic-resistant strains of both serovars have emerged and complicate clinical management.
