Leishmania is a genus of trypanosomatid parasites that are intracellular pathogens of the immune system and are the causative agents of the disease Leishmaniasis, which is an infectious disease that is transmitted by the bite of certain species of sand fly. Leishmania major is found only in the Eastern Hemisphere, specifically in Northern Africa, the Middle East, Northwestern China, and Northwestern India. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a skin infection caused by the hemoflagellate Leishmania. CL lesions are characterized by an ulcer with indurated borders and a necrotic base that often heals without treatment months after the initial infection.
