John Cunningham virus (JCV) is a ubiquitous, hemagglutinating and species-specific virus belonging to the Polyomavirus family. It usually causes asymptomatic infections in humans during childhood. It has the ability to remain dormant in the body and reactivate when situations occur that cause immunity deficit (immunodeficiency), in this case it causes serious infections in the central nervous system. JCV is the etiological agent of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a rare but often fatal demyelinating disease of the central nervous system (CNS).
