Cryptococcus neoformans is an encapsulated, spherical yeast. It is the etiologic agent of cryptococcosis, mycosis of subacute or chronic course that can present different clinical manifestations when inhaled. This monomorphic fungus is transmitted by inhalation from the droppings. After inhalation, Cryptococcus neoformans reach the alveoli where the capsule plays a fundamental role in virulence. Initial lung infection is usually asymptomatic, or very mild with minimal sputum production. The infection becomes evident when the clinical symptoms of chronic meningitis manifest.
