It is an emerging enteropathogenic bacterium that is a major cause of childhood diarrhea in underdeveloped countries, in which it constitutes a common origin of persistent diarrhea in infants. These bacteria adhere in groups to the cells of the mucosa, without invading them and without causing morphological changes, but altering their functioning which causes watery diarrhea without fever. They produce hemolysin and an ST enterotoxin similar to that of enterotoxigenics.
