Endogenous retroviruses (ERVs) are genomic elements that are present in a wide range of vertebrates. During the course of evolution, exogenous retroviruses have inserted themselves into the germ line, resulting in stably integrated endogenous retroviruses that are transmitted vertically to offspring. Their genetic organization is identical to that of the simple retroviruses. Interest in these genomic elements has accumulated due to their possible involvement in diseases such as multiple sclerosis and cancer.
