Equine piroplasmosis is caused by the intracellular, haemoprotozoan parasites Babesia equi (recently reclassified as Theileria equi) and Babesia caballi, which are transmitted by ticks of several genera. Clinical manifestation of the disease is variable and often includes icterus (jaundice), haemoglobinuria and fever. Animals with B. equi infections become life-long carriers.
