Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever virus (AHFV) is an enveloped, single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Flaviviridae family and is closely related to Kyasanur Forest disease virus. It is the causative agent of Alkhurma hemorrhagic fever, a zoonotic viral disease primarily reported in the Arabian Peninsula. The virus is associated with exposure to infected animals, particularly through tick bites or contact with infected animal tissues and blood. Clinical manifestations range from mild febrile illness to severe hemorrhagic disease, with symptoms including fever, headache, muscle and joint pain, gastrointestinal disturbances, and, in severe cases, bleeding and neurological complications. Molecular detection by RT-PCR provides a rapid and specific method for identifying AHFV infection, supporting early diagnosis and epidemiological surveillance.
