Dientamoeba fragilis is a human intestinal protozoan of the protist genus belonging to the order Tritrichomonadida. Although it belongs to a group of flagellated protists, this organism has secondarily lost the scourges. It has been associated with intestinal pathology worldwide showing symptoms such as diarrhea, loose stools and abdominal pain with a highly variable incidence. Its mode of transmission is unclear, and both the fecal-oral route and transmission through a vector have been proposed.
