The fowl adenoviruses (FAdVs) that infect chickens are in the genus Aviadenovirus and are classified into 5 species and 11 serotypes. In general, adenoviruses are considered quite resistant to heat, variations in pH, and desiccation. Some of the avian adenoviruses are ubiquitous in domestic fowl and have often been isolated from asymptomatic chickens. The diagnosis of FAdVs is mainly based on detection of viral DNA by PCR method.
