Streptococcus salivarius

Streptococcus salivarius is a Gram-positive commensal bacterium and one of the first colonisers of the human oral cavity and upper respiratory tract. Although generally harmless, it can act as an opportunistic pathogen causing bacteraemia, endocarditis and meningitis, especially in immunocompromised patients or after invasive medical procedures. Some strains are also studied and used as oral probiotics.

The OneqPCR-realtime™ Streptococcus salivarius Kit is a ready-to-use assay for the specific detection of Streptococcus salivarius DNA by real-time PCR (qPCR). Specific primers and a FAM-labelled hydrolysis probe amplify the target, while an internal control detected in the HEX channel reveals possible PCR inhibition or extraction failure. Positive and negative controls are included, and results can be analysed qualitatively or quantitatively using a standard curve.
