The Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) also known as Human herpesvirus type 1 (member of the Herpesviridae family) is the most common herpes simplex virus and most people develop it in childhood. By adulthood, up to 90% of people will have antibodies to HHV-1. Most primary infections are acquired through direct contact with a lesion or with infected body fluids (saliva, genital fluids, and exudates of active lesions). It is usually associated with infections of the lips, mouth, and face. HHV-1 causes gingivostomatitis, keratoconjunctivitis, encephalitis, herpes labialis, herpetic whitlow among others. HHV-1 is becoming the predominant cause of the first episode of genital herpes in young persons. The first time infection of the mother may lead to severe illness in pregnancy and may be associated with virus transmission from mother to foetus/newborn.
