The Human Cell Atlas (HCA) is one of the most ambitious scientific initiatives of our time. It aims to map every single cell type in the human body—creating a comprehensive, 3-dimensional reference atlas that will reshape our understanding of biology and revolutionize how we diagnose and treat disease.
Why Do We Need a Human Cell Atlas?
Every cell is a building block of life. By mapping their types, states, and locations, scientists can better understand how the human body works—and how it fails in disease. The Human Cell Atlas will support:
- Earlier and more precise diagnoses
- Tailored and more effective therapies
- Deeper insights into immunity, development, aging, and disease
- A foundation for future innovations in personalized medicine
A Truly Global Collaboration
Founded in 2016, the Human Cell Atlas Consortium has grown to include more than 3,900 members across over 1,700 institutions in 100+ countries.
This vast global network is organized through 18 Biological Networks (including the heart, liver, lungs, and immune system), and 4 Regional Networks in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America.
Partnership with UNESCO: Advancing Open Science
In a major milestone, HCA has recently partnered with UNESCO to promote open science and enhance global access to genomic research. This collaboration will help expand the capacity of scientists and institutions worldwide to deliver the benefits of genomic medicine to all populations.
