Trichomonas vaginalis, a protozoan parasite, is the causative agent of trichomoniasis, a common nonviral sexually transmitted disease in people. In men, the infection is usually asymptomatic, although it may cause irritating urethritis or prostatitis. In women, the disease is associated with a wide spectrum of clinical signs ranging from a relatively asymptomatic state to severe vaginitis with a foul-smelling vaginal discharge. Trichomoniasis, also has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcome, manifested by preterm rupture of membranes, preterm delivery, low-birth-weight infants, infertility and cervical cancer.
