Porcine enteroviruses are ubiquitous and found in a majority of pig herds. They belong to the family Picornaviridae and are highly resistant to the rigors of the environment. Although a majority of infections are asymptomatic, porcine enteroviruses have been associated with a variety of clinical including polioencephalomyelitis, female reproductive disorders, enteric disease, and pneumonia. The primary route of transmission is the fecal-oral route, and indirect transmission by fomites is very likely to occur because the viruses are relatively resistant.
