Ovine herpes virus 2 (OvHV-2), a gammaherpesvirus in the genu Macavirus, establishes a lifelong subclinical infection in domestic sheep (Ovis aries). However, transmission of OvHV-2 from sheep to susceptible members of the order Artiodactyla, including cattle, bison, deer, moose, exotic ruminants and pigs, can result in the disease called malignant catarrhal fever (MCF). Malignant catarrhal fever is can present with a variety of symptoms in different species, depending on their susceptibility to the virus.
