Medically important mycobacteria include those that cause tuberculosis (the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex), M. leprae (which causes leprosy) and a very large of Mycobacterium spp. (called nontuberculosis mycobacteria), which cause diseases called mycobacterioses.
