Vibrio oralii and other Vibrio species represent important bacterial pathogens affecting marine organisms and causing foodborne illness in humans through consumption of contaminated seafood and shellfish. V. oralii was recently identified as a distinct Vibrio species associated with fish and shellfish infections in aquaculture settings, causing vibriosis with systemic disease and significant mortality in farmed populations. The genus Vibrio includes numerous pathogenic species adapted to marine and estuarine environments, surviving well in salt water and thriving at elevated water temperatures. Comprehensive detection of major Vibrio species enables understanding of disease epidemiology in aquaculture operations and assessment of seafood safety.
