The Bacillus cereus group comprises closely related gram-positive bacteria including B. cereus, B. anthracis, and B. thuringiensis, with important differences in pathogenicity and environmental significance. Bacillus cereus is a common food-borne pathogen causing emetic and diarrheal disease through toxin production in food products and gastrointestinal tract. B. anthracis causes anthrax, a serious zoonotic disease affecting livestock and humans with high mortality if untreated. B. thuringiensis is used as a biological pesticide but can have adverse health effects. Accurate identification of group members is critical for food safety, public health surveillance, and biosecurity purposes.
