Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease that is found in parts of the subtropics, tropics, and southern Europe. Leishmaniasis is caused by infection with Leishmania, which are spread by the bite of infected sand flies. There are several different types of leishmaniasis in humans. The most common forms are visceral leishmaniasis, which affects several internal organs (usually liver, spleen, and bone marrow), and cutaneous leishmaniasis, which causes skin sores.
