Legionella species are gram-negative bacteria that colonize warm water environments including cooling towers, hot water systems, fountains, and air conditioning systems. Inhalation of contaminated aerosols causes Legionnaires disease, a severe pneumonia with high mortality if untreated, and Pontiac fever, a milder flu-like illness. Outbreaks associated with contaminated water systems cause significant public health concern and economic impact. Immunocompromised individuals and elderly people are at highest risk for severe disease.
