Human papillomavirus (HPV) has been detected in a wide spectrum of mucocutaneous lesions, ranging from benign lesions such as verruca vulgaris to malignancies such as squamous cell carcinoma. Over 120 HPV types have been identified and are referred to by number. Types 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 68, 73, and 82 are carcinogenic “high-risk” sexually transmitted HPVs .
