The genus Fusobacterium includes about 20 species of which the most important clinically are F. nucleatum and F. necrophorum. F. nucleatum is commonly found in periodontal disease. F. necrophorum infection causes Necrobacillosis and Lemierre’s syndrome is the classical presentation of human necrobacillosis. It is characterized by a primary infection in the head which subsequently develops with persistent high fever and disseminated metastatic abscesses, frequently including a septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein.
