The pathogenic significance of the equine gammaherpesviruses (EHV2 and 5) is uncertain, but they may cause upper respiratory tract disease, generalized malaise and fever, pharyngitis, and enlarged lymph nodes in young horses. Studies have shown that EHV-5 infection is very common in young horses and EHV-5 infections persist in young horses for at least several months.
