Enterovirus (member of the family Picornaviridae) infections are benign and are manifested by fever alone or, occasionally, present as distinct clinical syndromes such as hand-foot-mouth syndrome, herpangina, pleurodynia, and hemorrhagic conjunctivitis. Enteroviruses also cause potentially severe and life-threatening infections such as meningitis, encephalitis, myocarditis, polio-like syndrome, and neonatal sepsis. The introduction of direct detection of EV utilizing polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has allowed for improvements in time to diagnosis.
