Chlamydia psittaci is an obligate intracellular bacterium that causes avian chlamydiosis in parrots, pigeons, poultry and many other bird species. Infected birds may show respiratory, ocular or enteric signs, or shed the organism intermittently without symptoms. It is also a zoonotic agent: people exposed to infected birds or their dried droppings can develop psittacosis, an atypical pneumonia, which makes surveillance in aviaries, poultry farms and pet shops important.
The OneqPCR-realtime™ Chlamydia psittaci Kit is a ready-to-use assay for the specific detection of Chlamydia psittaci DNA by real-time PCR (qPCR). Specific primers and a FAM-labelled hydrolysis probe amplify the target, while an internal control detected in the HEX channel reveals possible PCR inhibition or extraction failure. Positive and negative controls are included, and results can be analysed qualitatively or quantitatively using a standard curve.
