Chlamydophila pneumoniae is an obligate intracellular pathogen that was first described as a cause of respiratory tract infections in humans. It has rarely been cultured from children with chronic otitis media. Infective endocarditis due Chlamydia pneumoniae, is very rare. The detection of C. pneumoniae in clinical specimens has been widely performed using PCR-based nucleic acid amplification techniques.
