Bursaphelenchus xylophilus, commonly known as the pine wood nematode (PWN), is a destructive parasitic nematode that causes pine wilt disease in coniferous forests, particularly affecting Pinus species. Native to North America, this pathogen has spread to Asia and Europe, causing massive economic and ecological damage. Infected trees show rapid wilting, needle discoloration, and death within weeks to months.
