Burkholderia pseudomallei is a non-fermenting gram-negative bacillus that is frequently found in soil and turbid waters, predominantly in tropical regions such as northern Australia and Southeast Asia. This microorganism tolerates the acidic pH and can survive in the water in the absence of nutrients for long periods. Burkholderia pseudomallei can cause melioidosis, an endemic disease of northern Australia and other tropical regions. Its most frequent clinical manifestation is pneumonia, which can be fatal.
