Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato is the causative agent of Lyme disease or Lyme borreliosis. Lyme borreliosis is commonly reported tick-borne infection in Europe and North America. Localized infection with the spirochete is typically manifested by an erythema migrans skin lesion. The organism can cause a multi-system disorder affecting a range of tissues including joints, skin, heart, nervous system, and to a lesser extent some other organs.
