Blastocystis hominis is an anaerobic unicellular microorganism belonging to the Chromist kingdom and is frequently found in the human gastrointestinal tract. Blastocystis is transmitted between animals and humans by ingestion of cysts, present in water or food contaminated with fecal matter from a carrier. The parasite can proliferate in the human body for years without causing symptoms, but because it secretes proteases, it can cause as a reaction, the production of antibodies and the consequent triggering of diarrhea, nausea, anorexia and abdominal spasms. It is not able to invade the intestinal mucosa.
