Bartonella quintana, a pathogen that is restricted to human hosts and louse vectors Pediculus humanus corporis, was first characterized as the agent of trench fever. The bacterium is responsible for a wide spectrum of conditions, including endocarditis, chronic bacteremia, and bacillary angiomatosis. Diagnosis is based on, culture, serologic analysis, and molecular biology.
