Bacillus anthracis is a dangerous pathogen that causes the disease anthrax. In humans there are three possible forms of the disease anthrax. The most common form has been cutaneous anthrax, in which the organism enters through a break in the skin. A more serious form is inhalation anthrax. Here the victim breathes in the organism and develops a severe respiratory disease. The third form, intestinal anthrax, is contracted from the consumption of contaminated meat.
