Akkermansia muciniphila is a species of human intestinal mucin-degrading bacterium. A. muciniphila is a Gram-negative, strictly anaerobic, non-motile, non-spore-forming, oval-shaped bacterium that has been inversely associated with obesity, diabetes, inflammation, and metabolic disorders. Also A. muciniphila could regulate adipose tissue metabolism, and therefore fat storage.
