It is a positive single-stranded RNA virus, belonging to the Picornaviridae family, of the Enterovirus genus. Coxsackieviruses recognize receptors expressed in various types of cells and tissues, and cause a wide range of diseases ranging from gastrointestinal pain to fully developed pericarditis and myocarditis. Symptoms of Coxsackie B group virus infection include fever, headache, in some cases insomnia, sore throat, gastrointestinal ailments, severe fatigue, as well as muscle and chest pains. It can also cause spasms in arms and legs. Coxsackie B virus infection can also cause aseptic meningitis.
