Entamoeba is a group of amoebas that are characterized by the absence of mitochondria to adapt to oxygen-free media. The genus comprises endoparasite amoebas, including several species that parasitize the human intestine. They have a cystic phase, where two to several nucleus divisions occur in most species. Most infections caused by Entamoeba are asymptomatic, but when invasive infections occur, they have very serious consequences for the host.
