Herpesviruses (HVs) are large, enveloped viruses with a double-stranded DNA genome and an icosahedral capsid. All of the reptilian HVs described so far belong to the family Herpesviridae, but none have yet been assigned to any of the existing genera. In reptiles, HVs have been detected in lizards, snakes, chelonians and crocodylians.
