Sleeping disease syndrome (SD) is a contagious disease of freshwater farmed fish caused by Sleeping Disease Virus (SDV). SD is characterized by a very particular sleeping behaviour with some of the fish in the affected group resting on their sides at the bottom of the tank. Following infection, SDV initially targets the pancreas and the heart. In the later stages of infection, skeletal muscle is also damaged.
