Hepatozoon canis is a tick borne protozoan parasite, classified in the Phylum Apicomplexa. The parasite is primarily transmitted by the tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus. In dogs, the infection results in the development of schizonts within various tissues and gamonts in the peripheral blood. Hepatozoon canis infection in dogs can be associated with a distinct clinical syndrome that involves chronic myositis, debilitation, and death.
