Classical swine fever (CSF) caused by virulent strains of classical swine fever virus (CSFV) – member of the Flaviviridae family of viruses- is a haemorrhagic disease of pigs. CSF is a highly contagious and often fatal disease of pigs and is classified by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) as a notifiable disease due to its potential for rapid spread across national borders and the considerable socio-economic impact on the pig industry. Pigs and wild boar are
the only natural reservoir of CSFV.
