Canine parainfluenza virus (CPIV) is similar to the human common cold virus. Alone, it is not very dangerous; however, infected animals become very prone to secondary infections (usually with the bacteria Bordetella Bronchiseptica). This results in kennel cough, is an acute inflammation of the upper airways that can progress to fatal pneumonia in puppies, or to chronic bronchitis in older dogs.
