Enterococcus faecalis, which exists commensally in the gut in warm-blooded animals and humans, is an opportunistic pathogen that causes urinary tract infections, intraabdominal infections, bacteremia, and endocarditis. The sources of enterococcal infections in humans are not clear, but animal reservoirs have been suggested.
