All Chlamydophila species are potential zoonotic pathogens, although Chlamydophila psittaci and Chlamydophila abortus are the most important. The symptoms of C. psittaci infections are variable and unspecific, resembling mild flu-like illness with fever, headache, shore throat, diarrhea, and myalgia but encephalitis, endocarditis, and severe interstitial pneumonia with non-productive cough, sometimes fatal, are also reported. C. abortus induces mild influenza-like illness or pneumonia in rare cases. Abortions due to C. abortus have been confirmed in pregnant women. Transmission of C. psittaci and C. abortus from animals to humans generally happens through inhalation.
