Bacteroides fragilis is an anaerobic Gram-negative bacillus component of the normal flora in human terminal ileum, the colon and the vagina. It is frequently associated with polymicrobial infections such as intra-abdominal, diabetic foot and obstetric-gynecologic tract. B. fragilis has only infrequentely been reported from acute dentoalveolar infections. Cases of sepsis, bacteremia, and endocarditis due to B. fragilis have also been reported.
