Mycoplasma pneumoniae is one of the main causes of respiratory diseases in humans. M. pneumoniae infection can also result in extrapulmonary manifestations, which can be present before, after or even in the absence of respiratory symptoms. Extrapulmonary manifestations of infection are rare, and can affect the central nervous system and can also result in dermatological, haematological and cardiac manifestations. Diagnostic testing for M. pneumoniae includes, among others, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays.
